"Life without music would not be as sweet. Thank goodness for radio, mp3, CD's and old records. But it's the live performance that touches us. Concert hall, street corner, coffee house, church or back porch ... the stage can be anywhere.
At a live performance in a small venue you learn about the personality of the performer. Maybe you liked the quirky anecdote he told about an original song. Perhaps you noticed her expression, with her eyes closed, as she sang a ballad. During the break you may have had the opportunity to meet the musician and ask questions.
And there is the sound; the pure, unedited sound. Even a little sharp or a little flat, it's real. The live performance may include variations and unexpected improvisations. You may have heard that song many times by many different musicians. Ah, but this time it had a new twist! It is unique music - and fleeting. The live performance also permits us to complete the other side of the equation. It allows us to show appreciation to hardworking, talented musicians with our generous applause. They need that recognition and, if the work is good, they deserve it.
That's not to say all live music is good. That would be foolish. But this is how it all starts. Stop by Black-Eyed Susan to experience what I mean."
